Search Engines: Search engines are web site indexes, searchable by specified words or phrases. Each engine has unique guidelines and criteria for determining listing placement of web sites, and these guidelines change daily as new technology is added. Over 90% of the search engine traffic to web sites comes from 8 major search engines - Excite, Alta Vista, Lycos, and Google. Inktomi powered engines (Hot Bot, MSN and Go), Northern Light.

Directories: Directories are paid listing services. Web sites must be submitted to these directories, which thoroughly screen all sites to assure listing qualifications are met. It is important to know the rules before submitting a web site into these directories. There are currently four important directories - Looksmart, Yahoo, Dmoz, GO. Two of these four directories require a non-refundable fee to even be considered into their directory with no guarantee of ever being listed.

Pay Per Click Directories: These are directories that require you to set up an account with a minimum balance. For these services, you choose your keywords and key-phrases and determine the placement of your website based on the amount of money you bid for each keyword. Your account is then deducted this amount for every click-through your site receives. Placements change in an auction-like fashion, as competing companies make bids on keywords for placement. Your account changes daily with new bids being processed every minute.

Keywords / Key-phrases: Keywords / key-phrases are exactly that: specified words or phrases that best capture the intent and content of a web site. Web users type these words into a search engine or directory to find items, sites and information they wish to locate.

Meta Tags: Meta tags are non-displayed text coded into HTML documents that describe a site to search engines for the purpose of cataloging a website's content. Some search engines use the full content of these meta tags, while some use partial meta information or none at all.

Door, Gateway, Informational Pages: Door pages are optimized pages created to act as a doorway between search engine users and an existing website. They are created to optimize a web page's search engine listing position.
